natural dyeing oN yarn

Kate James

The workshop will cover the basics including selecting and preparing plants for use as a dye material; non-toxic mordanting of animal (protein) fibres; making a dye bath; the dyeing process and experimenting with modifying/changing colours.

You will also learn: how to achieve colour fastness and the tests that you can perform to check for this; health and safety issues; and the equipment and materials you will need to get started dyeing from home.

Participants will have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and play with a dye pot before experimenting with post modifiers to see if further colours will come from the dye bath. There will be lots of time for questions as Kate demonstrates the techniques and methods and guides you through the process. There is also the opportunity to look at Kate’s own samples and reference materials.

There is a materials fee of $15 which covers all the materials you will use including pre-mordanted mini skeins, dyeing equipment and dyestuffs. This price also includes entry to the entire Soul Craft Festival for the day of the masterclass.

At the end of the workshop you will take home some sample skeins, an information booklet with the mordanting recipe and the confidence to start creating your own palette of coloured wool in beautiful hues, ready to weave, knit or do with as you please.
